Stag and Hen Nights
Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties
The stag night - also known as the bachelor party - has a long tradition and has been the source of many laughs in movies and TV shows. In recent decades the ladies have increasingly been demanding their share of the fun with hen nights (bachelorette parties).
These nights are rather unkindly referred to as the "last night of freedom" for the bride and groom to be. The idea is that it is a final chance to go out "on the town" with one's favourite friends of the same gender before taking the wedding vows and settling down to a sedate family life. The custom is thought to have orginated centuries ago however the exact origin is uncertain.

New Forest Cottages for your Hen Weekend or Stag Weekend

New Forest Cottages There are as many different stag and hen nights as there are brides and grooms, however many follow certain general principles. These have changed considerably over the last few generations however they still usually involve fun, games and gifts.
It used to be considered standard for the stag and hen parties to take place as close to the wedding as possible - possibly even the night before. This obviously presents all sorts of dangers, especially if the party becomes especially raucous. We've all heard tales of the groom waking up naked and handcuffed to a lamp post in a strange town on the morning of the wedding day. Not all such stories are apocryphal.
Nowadays it is more common to allow a sensible "recovery period" between the party night and the wedding itself, at least a week preferably a fortnight.
A stag or hen party used to consist simply of the participants visiting one or more of the local bars and clubs. Today it is increasingly common for the whole party to go away, often for a whole weekend. If you wish you can buy a complete party package and book everything in advance rather than relying entirely on the poor best man or chief bridesmaid to organise it all. Sometime these will be based around a particular theme.

New Forest Cottages It may surprise you to learn that the word stag hasn't always meant "male deer". In Middle English, stag (from the Old English stacga) could mean the adult male of any animal, especially if castrated (!). In the 19th century it was even used to mean a turkey-cock of two years or older. Thus, a stag-night or stag-dinner was a function attended by males only.
Similarly, in Middle English, hen could mean the female of any bird. Thus a hen night or hen party is one which is exclusively female.
Unlike stag, which meant any male animal, the Old English henn meant a fowl of either sex.

Hen Weekend or Stag Weekend in the New Forest

New Forest Cottages Origins of Stag Parties
In the UK, Ireland and Canada referred to as a stag party, stag night, stag do, or a bucks party in Australia and bachelor party in America is a party held for the single man just before he enters marriage bliss with his future wife. It is a celebration in the groom’s honour, although it may not seem like it at the time, and is sometimes known as his last night of freedom to answer the call of the wild and get up to activities which his future wife may not approve of.
It is an opportunity to gather together a group of people, as in our
New Forest Cottages who have had some influence or connection with the grooms rite of passage to manhood. This can be childhood friends, schools friends, student years, family, work colleagues and sport team associates. It can often be the last opportunity to get this grouping of people together before the Groom and his peers take on more responsible adult marital roles. This is not just you average night for drinking in the pub or bar. It has a tradition and mystique associated with it involving pranks, tricks and lots of drinking usually at the groom’s expense. It often has a risqué element such as strippers or being stripped and tied to lampposts in the dead of night. They have an image of being rowdy and boisterous

New Forest Cottages for Large Groups of up to 30 people for Hen Weekend or Stag Weekend

The consensus seems to be that it was originally called the bachelor dinner, or stag party. Like many other wedding traditions, the custom seems to extend back into ancient history. Evidence suggests it first came about in the fifth century, in Sparta, where military comrades would feast and toast one another on the eve of a friend’s wedding. There he would say goodbye to the carefree days of bachelorhood and swear continued allegiance to his comrades.
There's another stag connection with odd male rituals - even possibly ones that involve willingly drinking alcohol to excess and regurgitative quantities, soliciting the favours of ladies who are prepared happily to remove all their clothing for the appropriate fee, and then being left naked chained to a lamp-post somewhere.
New Forest Cottages The Horned God referred to in both Celtic and early English mythology was a symbol of all things male - the Celts called him Cernunnos. Legend from these times is often confused, but it seems clear that in pre-Christian times, Brits definitely worshipped a large hairy god who sported antlers, ran around with the Einheriar, or wild hunt, and who probably belched at inappropriate times, never bothered putting the toilet seat back down, and who stayed out far too late without ever phoning home to warn anyone. These are things you will have to get used to.

Welsh Custom for Hen Nights
In Wales tradition was that, female office and factory workers leaving to get married were often dressed up with balloons, "L" plates, carried a chamber pot (often with salt inside) and were covered in paper flowers and sometimes carried in a barrow to be paraded through the streets. Passing men were encouraged to kiss the prospective bride in exchange for money dropped into the chamber pot. This is used to raise funds towards the wedding feast. While still in evidence, this ritual is dying out.
The origin of Hen Parties is very practical. Hen parties were organized by other women of the village if the bride's father didn't accept the groom and refused to give his daughter a decent dowry. During the party the bride was presented with various things he would need in the first phases of marriage. see

Bridal showers or Hen Nights were also said to strengthen the ties between the bride and her friends.

Scottish Custom for Stag Night
On the wedding eve the bridegroom's friends throw the Stag party that often involves a combination of pranks and local customs. In Fife,a version of the custom of feet-washing still persists although only the good humoured bridegrooms permit the whole ritual that used to involve sitting in a tub of water while his chums pulled off his stockings and smeared his legs with a mixture of grease, soot and ashes. In many parts of Scotland variations of this are performed on the groom - all meant to guarantee good fortune in his future marriage.
Stag Night Celebrations - ideal in one of our
New Forest Cottages
A stag night, at which only males were allowed, was originally held to ward off evil spirits before the wedding. Around the time of Charles II hen nights were thought to have been introduced to allow the bride's friends and family to examine the trousseau and "bottom drawer". These days both seem to involve a last celebration of single status and appear to involve anything from go-karting to a week away in the sun! - in our

New Forest Cottages The stag night is the male equivalent of the Bridal Shower or Hen Night. Roman empire soldiers would feast with the Groom the night before his wedding to say goodbye to his irresponsible days of bachelorhood, and to renew their vows of allegiance to their friendships.

New Forest Cottages The reference to stag and bucks also has strong male conartations. The leader of the pack or herd, virile, male vigour and ardour, males in their prime identified with strength and vitality. There's another stag connection with male rites of passage - again possibly involving drinking alcohol to excess and soliciting the favours of ladies who are prepared happily to remove all their clothing for the appropriate sum. The Horned God referred to in both Celtic and early English mythology was a symbol of all things male - the Celts called him Cernunnos. Legend from these times is often confused, but it seems clear that in pre-Christian times, Brits definitely worshipped a large hairy god who sported antlers, ran around with the Einheriar, or wild hunt.
As to the word bachelor, again its history is murky. The earliest meaning of bachelor in English is 'a young knight who followed the banner of another'. This reference is first found in the late thirteenth century. The use of the word in the context of 'an unmarried man', is found in Chaucer in the late fourteenth century.
New Forest Cottages The English word, seems to come from Old French. The source of the Old French word, many believe, probably comes from a Latin word baccalaris 'farmhand' but who really knows well your guess is as good as the next man!

Origins of Stag Parties – Where does the term Come From?
This is a very good question and one we get asked alot about when having a drink or two with our visiting stag groups. In Britain,Canada and Ireland the event is referred to as a stag party, stag night, stag do or stag weekend. In Australia they are bucks parties and bachelor parties in America. It is a party held for the single man just before he gets married. It is a celebration in the his honour, although it may not seem like it at the time as humiliation seems to be the order of the day. It is also sometimes known as his last night of freedom although the duration of the event over recent years seems to have changed from the traditional drink the night before the wedding to weekends away participating in things such as adventurous activities and generally getting involved in things his future wife may not approve of.
New Forest Cottages It is a last chance as a bachelor to gather together a group of people who have known the him since childhood, through school, in University and work colleagues, sports clubs and obviously last but not least his family. It can often be the last opportunity to get this grouping of people together before the Groom and his peers take on more responsible adult marital roles – mortgages, children and monthly bills. This is not just you average night for drinking in the pub or bar. It has a tradition and mystique associated with it involving tricks and lots of drinking usually at the groom’s expense. It often has a risqué element such as strippers or being stripped and tied to lampposts in the dead of night, body hair being shaved off, dressing up in fancy dress with the groom in female attire the list is endless.

Hen NIght Garter
Brides originally tossed a garter, rather than a bouquet, at a wedding reception. In the 14th century, this custom changed after Brides became tired of fighting off drunken men who tried to remove the garter themselves! According to one legend, the garter toss in England evolved from an earlier tradition of "flinging the stocking". On their wedding night, guests would follow the Bride and Groom to their bedroom, wait until they undressed, steal their stockings, and then "fling" them at the couple! The first person to hit the Bride or Groom on the head would supposedly be the next person to marry.
Giving the Bride Away -
New Forest Cottages
Years ago women were deemed to belong to their father. When she married it was therefore her father who "gave her away" along with her property to the groom - to whom she then belonged! In some cases the groom was also given a pair of the bride's old shoes to indicate that it was now his responsibility to keep the bride in shoe leather.
Groom Kidnaps Bride
The groom used to kidnap his bride and hold her on his left arm, so that his sword arm was free to fight off any other suitors. This is why the groom normally stands on the right of the bride during the wedding ceremony. If the groom needed help to kidnap his bride he would ask his best friend to be his "best man".
Marriage was often used as a means to bring together two opposing tribes so the families sat on opposite sides in order to try and avoid any fighting in the church.

Wedding Gifts for the Bride
A bride may be given a silver sixpence and asked to place it in her shoe on the wedding day. Though this may sound a very uncomfortable way to walk around on the day the giver is hoping that it will bring you a life of fortune so it may turn out to be a small price to pay if it works!
So meting Old - Something New -
New Forest Cottages - ??? !!!
Nearly every couple is aware of the old rhyme about something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue but what does it all signify? The "something old" is to show the durability of marriage and the continuity of your old life into the new married one. The "something" new symbolises the start of building your new life together as a married couple. The "something borrowed" - borrow one of our
New Forest Cottages item is the one which you may wish to choose most carefully as it should be from a happily married woman whose virtues you most wish for, to assist in ensuring marital bliss. The "something blue" is used to promise love, fidelity and purity.

Buttonholes
Traditionally men wear their buttonholes on the left lapel pointing upwards, whilst women wear theirs on the right lapel. The custom follows on from the early days of jousting, where a Knight would wear his Lady's colours to represent his love for her.
Wedding Ring - Engagement Ring -
New Forest Cottages
The custom of wearing a wedding ring stems from ancient times when a bride might have worn a ring made of hemp or rushes, which would have been frequently replaced. The ancient Egyptians believed that the circular shape of the ring was a sign of undying, never ending love, a love without beginning or end. Some of the early engagement rings were also used as a wedding ring to show the "sale" of the woman from her father to the groom, they were usually made of gold as a sign of the groom's worth. The perfect finger for the wedding ring to be worn on is believed to be the third finger of the left hand, as it was traditionally thought that this contained a vein that went straight to the heart.

Origin of Stag Parties - New Forest Cottages

In Sparta, during the height of Greek civilisation, soldiers were the first to hold stag parties. The groom would invite his close friends to a supper on the eve of his wedding to celebrate and reminisce about his past. Traditionally, it was also held to raise money for the bridegroom so he would be able to continue to drink with his buddies after his wife took control of the finances! He would bid farewell to his bachelorhood and pledge his continued allegiance to his comrades.
